Where club building funding comes from
Football Foundation
The main route for grassroots football facilities in England, covering changing rooms, pavilions and clubhouse improvements. Applications are made through the Football Foundation portal and normally require a written supplier quotation, a layout and evidence of need from the club and its leagues.
ECB and county cricket boards
Cricket facility funding is generally coordinated through the ECB and your county cricket board, with grants and interest-free loans towards pavilions, changing provision and accessible facilities. County officers usually want to see the scheme and a price before an application is submitted.
RFU facility funding
The RFU supports club facility projects including changing rooms, showers, officials' rooms and clubhouse space. Clubs are typically asked for a costed scheme, a projected usage case and confirmation of match funding.
LTA funding
The LTA supports court, floodlighting and clubhouse projects, including pavilions and changing provision alongside new padel courts. A written building price and layout sits alongside the court quotation in most applications.
National Lottery and Sport England
Sport England and National Lottery funding backs community sport projects, with a strong emphasis on participation, inclusion and accessible provision. Expect to evidence who will use the building, how often and what difference it makes.
Local authority, CIL and Section 106
Councils hold community infrastructure and developer contribution funds that are regularly used for sports facilities. Amounts and deadlines vary by authority, so ask your council's community or planning team what is currently available.
Community shares, crowdfunding and club fundraising
Many clubs combine a grant with a community share issue, crowdfunding or their own reserves. A fixed, itemised building price makes the target credible and is often what unlocks the match-funding requirement in a grant application.
Funding programmes, criteria and deadlines change. Check the current position with the funder or your county or regional governing body officer before you build an application around a particular route.

Typical briefs by sport
Football
Two team changing rooms with separate entrances, a shower area per side, an officials' room with its own WC and shower, and a kit and equipment store. Clubs running girls' and women's teams generally need a third changing space or a room that can be allocated separately.
Cricket
Two changing rooms with showers, umpires' provision, a scorer's position with a view of the square, an accessible WC for spectators and a tea or servery space.
Rugby
Larger changing rooms and shower provision sized for full squads, a boot wash and drying area, officials' room and a social space for after the match.
Tennis and padel
A compact pavilion with WCs, a small changing and shower provision, a coaching or reception point and covered seating facing the courts.
Community and multi-sport clubs
A flexible hall or social room with a servery, accessible WCs, storage and changing provision that can be allocated to whichever team is using the site that day.
Building in phases as funding lands
Clubs rarely fund a whole facility in one round. A modular building can be delivered in stages: changing rooms and WCs first, then the social space, servery or gym when the next round is confirmed. Each phase is a complete, usable building, and later modules link into the existing run without rebuilding what is already there. Lay the base for the final footprint up front and every later phase is a straightforward delivery.
